Gordes is a picturesque medieval city located on a rocky hill. Approaching Gordes, you can enjoy a tremendous view. A castle and a cathedral on top, stone houses and city walls below, green trees on terraces and streets. Alpilles mountains on the horizon and beautiful valley, surrounding the hill, add more strokes to the landscape.
Gordes has a rich history. There is a big castle located in the city center. The castle was first mentioned in official documents in 1030. Its current image the castle received in 1525 – 1541, when it was rebuilt in Renessaince style by Bertrand-Rambaud de Simiane, baron de Gordes et de Caseneuve. Since that time, the castle has two faces: a fortified northern facade and a Renessaince-style southern one. The castle has been a part of the Historical heritage of France since 1931.
A Hungarian painter Victor Vasarely bought the castle in 1970. Being a leader of an op art movement, Vasarely opened his first dedicated museum with over 500 works in the castle. The museum attracted additional tourists to Gordes. Currently, there is a Pol Mara Museum in the castle. Pol Mara was contemporary Flemish painter and a citizen of the city of Gordes.
Gord is an authentic and a very cosy village which will charm you with its streets, squares, houses, and flowers. The same thing happened to the English film director and producer Ridley Scott, who chose Gordes to be the main location for filming A Good Year, 2006.
One of the most famous monasteries of France is located five minutes of driving from Gordes. It is a medieval (XIIth century) Cistercian Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey. It is well-known not only for its wonderfully preserved architecture, but also for its lavender field, which is one of the most popular in Provence. I was there on June 15, lavender was not blossoming yet at that time.
