The Calanques are a true natural wonder. It is an amazingly beautiful place at the Mediterranean coast near Marseille, France. I’ve been there more than hundred times, but still enjoy the views, the colors, the sounds, and the smells each my trip there.

The Calanques are a picturesque mixture of the sea, the rocks, the trees, and the sun. Majority of the Calanques are narrow winding bays with high rocky banks. These rocks have very interesting and beautiful forms at some places.

The Calanques are located on the territory of the Calanques National Park, covering 520 sq. km of land and water near three cities – Marseille, Cassis, and La Ciotat.

You can explore the Calanques by foot or from a boat. Each way has its advantages. If you go by foot, you can see much more, you can discover amazing panoramic views (because you can get higher, less or more close to the sea), and you can take your time during your trip. Taking a boat tour, you can see different Calanques. And it is much easier, as you do not have to walk.

If you are planning a short trip to the Calanques, I recommend you to start with the ones located near Cassis. The Calanques Port Miou, Port Pin, and d’En-Vau are very beautiful, located close to each other and close to Cassis and parkings. At Around Provence we offer two types of tours to these places:

The first one is shorter and includes visiting two Calanques – of Port Miou and Port Pin. Such trip is good for families with small children – the distance is not big and there is a nice beach at Port Pin, where you can have a picnic and swim;

The second one is longer (about 12 km) and has three Calanques in the itinerary – of Port Miou, Port Pin, and d’En-Vau. The distance is much bigger, but the views you can enjoy near d’En-Vau are amazing. All people who get there say that it is worth a long walk.

The Calanques are beautiful during all year. In winter it may be a bit cold because of the wind – check the weather forecast in advance – but there are much less people. In spring and autumn it is almost perfect, but the water may be cold. In summer it can be too crowded sometimes and sometimes too hot, but you can swim in the turquoise waters of Port Pin or d’En-Vau.

I recommend everyone to visit the Calanques. This place is very beautiful. I’m sure you will remember such journey for a long time.
